It could just be me, but 10-year-old metal heads might be the cutest thing ever. You know, I usually hate the depiction of kids on TV, finding them caricatures and wanting to sucker punch them all, but Back in the Game has stepped up and written interesting, dynamic, and hilarious kids.
For example, this week Danny has bought into the Bad Boy Myth that was the bread and butter of 90s TV and 2000s CW shows. It's a tale as old as time: boy meets girl with douchey boyfriend, boy becomes douche in order to become boyfriend, boy finds self assurance and becomes boy again, girl likes boy. Or joins boy's baseball team, in this case.
Somehow, Back in the Game made the story cute again. Possibly because seeing little Danny in a Metallica t-shirt was just hilarious. Then again, it could be because of The Cannon's part in Danny's transformation and Terry's reaction to it. The Cannon was, of course, the instigator, plying Danny with promises of true love if he acts like a big enough asshat. He causes the problem and leaves Terry to pick it up, as usual. However, when Terry is unavailable (due to excessive getting plastered), The Cannon has to deal with Danny's newfound attitude. He finally concedes that the bad boy play should be used sparingly. Great advice.
Terry also tries to be someone she's not this episode: someone exciting. I actually found her frustration sympathetic, but she needs to find a setting in between nagging stressed out mom and completely wasted psycho. I want to like Terry, I really do, but she doesn't have depth yet. She's our protagonist! How is it that her 10-year-old kid is more compelling?
